Participating trainees should be PC literate (Microsoft Windows, keyboard and mouse skills), have basic PLC and network knowledge. A knowledge of programming is advantageous. Students must bring a suitable laptop (see computer requirements below). The latest version of the WinCC OA software will be installed on this laptop as part of the training.
In addition you should check the following settings and requirements for your computer to make sure you are set up correctly to begin this class.
Notepad++ is a free text editor. It automatically recognizes Linux-style files and UTF-8 language
content. We find this tool to be very good for detailed configuration of OA files.
OA does support firewalls and anti-virus, but for training and testing, it is best to start with these
items disabled or turned off. This allows the class to focus on the software and not the many
complexities of secure systems. If you need help with those topics, please contact our support
department for assistance.
During the class, you may have the chance to use one of the remote UI features. These are the
supported Microsoft browsers for those features. The latest Chrome or Firefox are also
Some exercises will involve mass configuration of projects. OA uses an Excel addin to streamline
many of the configuration processes.
During the course, you will need to connect to shared drives to get install files and other training
materials. Be sure your computer can browse to a network computer or NAS drive and open a
shared folder and copy files to and from that remote folder.
The training and testing environments are workgroups not domains, and therefore will not have
DHCP for name to IP lookup. We will be using the hosts file to build lists of partner computers,
Oracle servers or PLCs in the training network. As a test before you come, please un-comment
the lines in the hosts file for the two localhost entries. (we need you to leave both IPv4 and IPv6
To build server and redundant servers, you will need to create folders with permissions and
shares for the network.
Our training equipment will be in this IP address range. Be sure you can hard-code your IP
address for one of these ranges in the 4 th octet.
These are usually hidden on Windows computers. Installing and changing folder permissions oustide the Documents folders requires that we have the actual administrator account unlocked and available. The trainer and other Siemens people will be using the administrator user and the password: Password1
This is a general rule for OA Servers. There are a lot of cases when the computer name is used as a command line option. If it has a '-' or a dash in the name, it may be misinterpreteded as a switch setting.
Computers that are on a domain have very limited permissions and many times cannot share folders with non-domain users or even TCP connections. Just logging out of the domain is not enough, please come with a standalone VM.
Most of the students will be using Windows. It would be best to bring your own VM of Windows 7 SP1 64-bit Ultimate/Enterprise/Professional, or Windows 10 64-bit Enterprise/Professional with latest patches already installed. If you bring Server 20112 R2 64-bit, please have some knowledge about administrating Server OS.
